WARRIOR: OTTERFOOT

Otterfoot was born into a litter of three and was Galeheart and Earthstone's second litter but third try. Galeheart was pregnant when her two sons from her first litter were training to be warriors. However she miscarried after a fall that nearly killed her. The fall broke her leg as well and though it healed, it healed wrong and was left at a strange angle. She could still walk with only a bit of a limp and it didn't stop her from swimming though she would never swim as strong or fast as she had before. This put an end to her warrior carrier and her dreams of becoming a great warrior but this did not break her. Galeheart refused to retire to the elder's den and decided to become a permanent queen and help raise the kits. Her determination not to break from this made Earthstone fall in love with her more and helped her in what way he could. Her two sons were proud more than ever for their mother but no one was prouder and grateful than Galeheart's father Onefang.

Not long after joining the queens did Galeheart became pregnant and gave birth in newleaf to a litter of three kits. In the first litter, both Antlerclaw and Groundnose looked like their father, but in the second litter only one looked like Earthstone. The she-kit looked like her mother, a grey speckled, while the other tom looked like his grandfather Onefang, thick-furred grey and white tom. Galeheart and Earthstone looked at the brown kit. His body pelt had a lighter brown than his legs, and tail and his face and ears were nearly black. He was also lithe and looked rather sleek and the way he wiggled they thought immediately about an otter and decided to name him Otterkit. The only she-kit was so quiet even when she was born. Her mews were soft like a whisper and though they had several names in mind they decided to go with Quietkit. The last kit, because of his fur color and texture they decided to call him Coyotekit.

Life became a bit hectic and lively when the kits were old enough to venture out of the den. They often played with the other kits though Quietkit was more reserved than her brothers. Otterkit became best friends with two kits a moon older than he was, Lightningkit and Echokit. He liked how adventurous they both were though Lightningkit was more reckless while Echokit was bolder and stubborn. With Coyotekit all four kits got in lots of trouble. Pulling pranks on the other Clanmates and trying to go swimming in the water without adult super vision. Often enough it was Otterkit who led most of those escapades though some of them it was Lightningkit's idea.

At five moons Otterkit convinced his littermates to sneak out of camp at night. Quietkit was against the idea but went with them only to try and keep them an eye on them. It was stormy that night but Otterkit was too excited to change his mind. Quietkit became nervous and scared from the downpour and the wind. At the edge of the island she begged her brothers to change their mind. Annoyed with his sister Otterkit told her she could stay and remain a coward. Coyotekit became angry with his brother and the two argued. The arguement quickly stopped when Quietkit tried to stop them but slipped on a wet stone and fell in the churning water.

Shocked both toms stared at where their sister disappeared. Otterkit was the first to take action, he dove in the water after her while Coyotekit ran and yowled for help. He swam his hardest to get to her, going deep into the water. Quietkit had hit her head from her fall and was knocked unconscious. Otterkit was nearly out of air when he reached her and pulled her back up to the surface. Antlerclaw who had been on guard duty swam towards them and helped them both to the island. The other warriors joined in to help, including Earthstone who was in the lead of the rest. Quietkit wasn't breathing and Otterkit feared he had lost his sister because of his choices. The medicine cat managed to pump the water out of her lungs and saved her life. All three kits were to be punished but Otterkit took most of it because it had been his idea in the first place. He wasn't angry but accepted it fully and helped clean the elders den with full dedication. Because of his sister nearly dying Otterkit had vowed he would never make such risky decisions.


At six moons the three kits became apprentices. Otterpaw was happy to be an apprentice with his two best friends, but happier still to leave camp and see the territory. Otterpaw was mentored by Beavertail. A skilled warrior but very lazy and evasive. Or that's what the Clan thought he was. Beavertail was more of a listener and an observer than a talker. As for the lazy part he just liked taking naps and refreshing his energy to fish. At first Otterpaw didn't like Beavertail. He couldn't believe a skilled warrior like he was would waste it. Eventually Beavertail taught Otterpaw the importance of stopping to observe and listen. Otterpaw eventually gained Beavertail's sleeping habits but worked hard throughout his apprenticeship. He had his mother's dream to be a great warrior and was serious to hone his skills.

Because he nearly didn't make it to his sister when she fell in the water and almost drowned himself Otterpaw had decided to train on lengthening that. He would dive underwater and try to remain underwater for as long as possible. At the end of this he managed to hold his breath for nearly six minutes. His own training to become stronger didn't stop there. Otterpaw often jumped from rock to rock repeatedly, to try and keep his balance while going faster or higher. He dove frequently and swam up river till his legs were numb with exhaustion. The leaping from rock to rock helped build up his leaping abilities and balance, and the swimming up river made his legs stronger so he could swim or run fast. He became quite good at catching fish and he was clever in fighting. Though he wasn't the strongest Otterpaw made up for it in speed and resilience.

Otterpaw trained so hard he ended up taking naps like his mentor but no one really thought of him as lazy since he trains so much and with such determination. Otterpaw eventually hurt his leg, the bone slightly cracked when he slipped on the rocks. He missed his step because he was pushing too hard and exhausting himself. His family had worried for him but no one more so than Galeheart. When she heard her son broke his leg she feared he would end up like her, crippled for the rest of his life. Luckily that wasn't so. Echopaw and her brother was with him and it was Lightningpaw who quickly went to get help while Echopaw tried to help Otterpaw back to the bank. Before the help arrived Echopaw had lectured Otterpaw not to try so hard or go so far. The medicine cat helped treat the injury and in two weeks Otterpaw was allowed back into training. Otterpaw wasn't the same as before. He didn't take his training as hard and as much. He returned to his pranks and playful nature but there was more. After that day he fractured his left foreleg his feelings for Echopaw changed. He felt flustered when she was near and thought about her constantly.

Yet he wasn't the only one who had secret feelings for Echopaw. His brother, Coyotepaw, too liked her. However, the brothers both knew they had feelings for her. They were already distant because of their rivalries to warriorhood. Coyotepaw resented his brother and tried to show off for Echopaw, but this only annoyed the pale grey and white she-cat. Otterpaw tried not to behave any differently from her and tried his best to be just her best friend. The more she wanted to hang around with Otterpaw the angrier Coyotepaw became.

When Otterpaw became eleven moons old Echopaw and her brother became warriors. Echopaw was named Echolight for her bright and warm personality and optimism. Her brother Lightningpaw was named Lightningstep for his fast reflexes and balance. Otterpaw couldn't be happier for her. The day after her warrior ceremony Coyotepaw couldn't contain his feelings anymore. He wanted Echolight to be his mate when he became a warrior. That night Echolight was sharing tongues with her brother and Otterpaw. Coyotepaw went straight up to her and boldly told her his feelings in front of everyone. This embarrassed Echolight as most of the Clan were staring. But Coyotepaw didn't stop there. He told her she shouldn't be spending so much time with Otterpaw and that just angered her. The silver she-cat told him she didn't care the least about him and he had no right to tell who she can spend her time with. She stormed off out of camp. Enraged Coyotepaw glared at Otterpaw and turned away. What relationship the two had evaporated on that night.

Nearly the end of his apprenticeship things between Otterpaw and Coyotepaw didn't change but gradually got worse. Every time Coyotepaw wished to hang out with Echolight she would say she was spending time with Otterpaw. It pleased him that she wanted to spend time with him but it also made him uneasy. He was aware of his brother's hatred and jealousy of him but has no idea how to repair their broken relationship. One evening, Echolight wished to go out for a midnight walk as she usually likes to do. Coyotepaw was about to offer joining her but when she spotted Otterpaw she quickly asked him before Coyotepaw had the chance. This enraged Coyotepaw and he stormed off. Otterpaw didn't refuse Echolight's offer and together they walked together. He knew that by being with Echolight his relationship with his brother would never be repaired but he couldn't help but be by her side.

Coyotepaw had enough of his brother. He had followed the two cats and was angered further by how close they were. Coyotepaw attacked his brother and the two fell in the river. They struggled against one another. Otterpaw eventually broke free of his brother, kicking him deeper underwater and reached the surface. Coyotepaw never reached the surface. He was so tangled in the weeds he couldn't break free. Otterpaw tried to free his brother but about time he freed him, Coyotepaw was dead.


Days after the tragic death, Otterpaw and his sister both were made warriors and Otterpaw was named Otterfoot for his speed. His sister was named Quietsong for her soft voice and grace. He is yet to admit his feelings to Echolight and grieved for his dead brother who he thought he could have saved.
